Chile-born Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo uses an even mix of digitally and hand crafted marks to create his illustrations and portraiture work. His vivid illustrations and collages of faces range from being precise and realistic to eerily abstracted layers of line and color. The addition of the watercolour textures he uses in some of his more collaged pieces adds another level of depth and complexity to his already intricate work.

A cast of villains, apparitions and film stars populate the mixed media work of Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo. These colourful characters belong to a world that knows pain, horror and dread. A world of vibrant colours and hand crafted textures.
Formally trained as a graphic designer Hidalgo skilfully dissects an image down to its elements, and then creates something awkward and disturbing yet beautiful and vibrant. The creations that fill his illustrations are born like Frankenstein’s monster, from gifted hands. The Chilean illustrator when once asked what he would have been if not an illustrator answered a butcher.

I’ve never been a huge lover of digital based art, possibly because of my love of all things old. I get satisfaction out of art that has been produced with the eye and the hand that combine as one unit to create a masterpiece. Although I’m aware a lot of art these days, particularly photography, uses a fair amount of digital technology, there is something so miraculous about the notion of someone with a pencil and paper creating thoughts and emotions through imagery.

So, when I came across the work of Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo, my usual taste went flying out of the nearest window. Aside from my penchant for all things old, I'm usually averse to overly bright and vibrant art. However, I’m absolutely infatuated with these eye popping and hard hitting portraits; they’ve got a depth and an appeal that really speaks to me.

What I seem to be drawn to are the eyes - the window to the soul as they are often referred to. In these images though, they are non-descript and blank but at the same time they convey horror and disbelief. The ink splatters which seem to be laid over quite a few of his pieces are a nice break away from the hard lines and create a charming contrast. Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo may have just converted me to the bright side.

Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo is an illustrator working out of Granada, Spain. Along with motion graphics, web design, and logos, he is also an amazing illustrator with a very unique style. It look as though his works are primarily created with Illustrator, and then textures and various brush work are added to the pieces to give them a more unique feel and depth. Some of the works could very easily translate into traditional watercolor portraits, provided the artist used some stencils in the initial setup. I especially like the works based on horror movie icons, with the intense color palettes he uses the juxtaposition of horror and color is amazing.

You won’t find Alvaro Tapia’s work in the Musee d’Orsay or on any museum wall surrounded by the works of impressionistic masters. Where you can find it is on your home office wall, displayed besides your flat-screen TV or in any makeshift home theater you are trying to build. “Realistic” is probably not the first word that comes to mind when you first lay eye on the pop artist’s work, but that notion seems to have been all but removed from the modern art dictionary anyway so why just toss some photographs on your wall when Tapia can be your interior decorator. Choose either posters or art prints (or greeting cards if you have a friend with bizarre taste like you) of Edgar Allen Poe, Taxi Drive, or another random depiction. We can safely say it is the only time someone will call Steve Buscemi a thing of beauty.

"Graphic designer Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo has created an ultra-cool set of graphics that focuses on prominent facial features.

The graphics are brightly colored and a little dark when it comes to the emotion behind the work. The illustrator takes some of pop culture’s more infamous characters such as Shelley Duvall’s character in The Shining, but instead of merely recreating her image, he has added his own twist.

The dark illustrations are contrasted on the prominent features, such as the subject’s nose or hair. In contrast to the dark colors, Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo uses a brighter tone such as fuchsia and bright orange, making it the focal point of his pieces.

The Chilean artist used both digital and manual techniques to produce his unique, stand-out illustrations."

Beards And Bites
Recently I have discovered my joy of fuzz; whether it be a scruffy hobo’s beard or an adorable puppy - fuzz is amazing. One artist who happens to have a collection of pieces that covers both kinds of fuzz is Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo. Alvaro is a Chilean artist who works in all forms of media, specializing in prints like those previously depicted and his work is an impressive combination of all the different mediums he uses. In an interview with Alvaro, he expressed to us the influence his work has on his and those around him saying; “I strongly believe that everything you do in creative work is the result of the many inputs you get from your own experience in life and your observation of the world around you. These inputs stimulate your creative work, whether you are aware of it or not.” Hidalgo (not to be confused with the legendary racing horse) has a vast collection of interesting pieces for every type of artist, inspiring the artists here at FERAL to open up their boundaries when it comes to different fields of art, as well as inspiring many to experiment in all mediums and perhaps falling in love with a new form of art. This post goes out to Hidalgo and all of you wild children. Make sure to check out more of Alvaro’s website for more of his fuzzy work: www.alvarotapia.com. Also, feel free to check out his flickr for immediate visual satisfaction: www.flickr.com/photos/alvarotapia. "One of two creators involved in Monomov design agency based centrally to Valparaiso Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo is an experienced professional in both the fields of Design and Film. As a multitalented creative Alvaro transferred his experience into education in 2004 and began teaching in various establishments of higher education, Today he brings us this short visual pleasing piece of production crafted using semetrical objects and a vibrant backdrop. I like how Alvaro has transformed the everyday movement of individuals into a moving artwork which is a real treat for the eyes, the silhouetted characters work well as a collective of persons to create one lively light hearted visual works. As director and post producer of short films, commercials and video clips, he has been a scriptwriter and director of two short films in 16mm film: Cut Butcher (2004) and Cabezón Informer (2008) and director of more than a dozen of audiovisual works and experimental animation. Comentario de Corte Carnicero en revista Vulture (Valencia, España)

LA VIDA EN CORTO · REVISTA VULTURE Nº 49 · FEBRERO 2008 · España
por G. Forcada y M.A. Forcada.

It`s the beat!.
